البلور السائل طُليت به يد إنسان (اليمنى) في الصورة تظهر المناطق ذات درجات الحرارة المتنوعة في صورة ألوان مختلفة. اللون الأزرق هوأدفأ المناطق، يليه اللون الأخضر، ثم اللون الأحمر وهوأكثرها برودة. ويدل تحول اللون إلى اللون الأخضر (في اليسار) على حتى درجة حرارة اليد انخفضت.

البلَّور السائل Liquid crystal مادة لها خصائص جميع من السائل والبلَّور إذ يمكن حتى تنساب كالسائل، ومع ذلك تصطف جزيئاتها اصطفافًا جزئيًا مثل البلًور. وبتعريض السائل البلَّوري لمجال مغنطيسي، أوتغيير درجة حرارته، يحدث تخلخل في ترتيب جُزَيئاته، ويصير معتمًا أويتغير لونه. وقد أكسبت هذه الخاصية البلور السائل فائدة عملية في استخدامات شاشات الحواسيب، والساعات، ولوحات أجهزة القياس بالسيارات.

Smectic phases

Chiral phases

الأطوار الزرقاء

Blue phases are special types of liquid crystal phases that appear in the temperature range between a chiral nematic phase and an isotropic liquid phase. الأطوار الزرقاء have a regular three-dimensional cubic structure of defects with lattice periods of several hundred nanometers, and thus they exhibit selective Bragg reflections في نطاق طول موجة الضوء (الجزء المرئي من الإشعاع الكهرومغناطيسي) المناظر للعقد المكعب.

Discotic phases

Disk-shaped LC molecules can orient themselves in a layer-like fashion known as the discotic nematic phase. If the disks pack into stacks, the phase is called a discotic columnar. The columns themselves may be organized into rectangular or hexagonal arrays. Chiral discotic phases, similar to the chiral nematic phase, are also known.

ويتم إظهار الأرقام والحروف التي نراها على هذه الشاشات من خلال توصيل عدة قوى كهربائية محركة صغيرة بالبلور السائل. ويكون البلور السائل رائقًا لايمكن رؤيته عندما تكون هذه القوى الكهربائية غير موصلة بالتيار الكهربائي. فإذا تم توصيل التيار الكهربائي، يصير البلور السائل معتمًا بالدرجة التي تسمح برؤيته، فتؤدي جزيئاته إلى استطارة بعض الضوء الساقط عليه. والنبضات الإلكترونية بالآلات الحاسبة هي التي تحدد أي أجزاء الشاشة يصبح معتمًا بحيث يكوِّن شكل الحرف أوالرقم المطلوب.

تُستخدم أنواع معينة من البلور السائل لقياس درجة الحرارة أولتحديد النقاط الساخنة أوالباردة على سطح ما. ويعكس هذا النوع من البلور السائل ألوانًا معينة من الضوء، نظرًا للأسلوب الخاص الذي تصطف به جُزَيئاته. ويتحدد اللون المنعكس تبعًا لدرجة حرارة السطح المستهدف.

The model utilizes two order parameters that describe the orientational and positional order of the liquid crystal. The first is simply the average of the second Legendre polynomial and the second order parameter is given by:

The values z_i, θ_i, and d are the position of the molecule, the angle between the molecular axis and director, and the layer spacing. The postulated potential energy of a single molecule is given by:

Here constant α quantifies the strength of the interaction between adjacent molecules. The potential is then used to derive the thermodynamic properties of the system assuming thermal equilibrium. It results in two self-consistency equations that must be solved numerically, the solutions of which are the three stable phases of the liquid crystal.
