فى فهم التشريح فإن ال, mesencephalonأو( دماغ متوسط) يضم tectum (أوcorpora quadrigemini), tegmentum, the ventricular mesocoelia أو( "iter"), والcerebral peduncles, بالإضافة الى الكثير من nuclei وfasciculi. Caudally ال mesencephalon يرتبط ب pons (metencephalon) و يرتبط ب diencephalon (Thalamus, hypothalamus, et al).

أثناء النمو, the mesencephalon ينشأ من وسط three vesicles التى تنشأ من ال neural tube لكى يتكون المخ brain. في مخ الإنسان البالغ المكتمل, mesencephalon يصبح متميزا ومختلفا من كلا developmental form and within its own structure, among the three vesicles. The mesencephalon يعد جزءا من brain stem. Its substantia nigra is closely associated with motor system pathways of the basal ganglia.

mesencephalon البشرى قد يكون archipallian في الأصل, وهذا يعنى حتى أصل هجريبه يتشابه مع مثيله في الفقاريات القديمة vertebrates. Dopamine الذى ينتج في substantia nigra يلعب دورا في motivation وhabituation في الفصائل من الإنسان الى أغلب الحيوانات الأولية وتضم الحشرات.

The human brain looks rather like an enormous walnut, it weight about three or three and half pounds and made up, like other organs, of cells, it has been mapped out in minute detail.

يبدوالدماغ البشري مشابهاً لجوزة ضخمة, ويزن من حوالي ثلاثة الى ثلاثة ونصف باوندات, ويتكون من الخلايا, كسائر الأعضاء, وهومخطط بأدق التفاصيل.‏

Since the men who first dissected the brain used Latin and Greek, the various parts of the brain have Latin or Greek names: the brain itself is the زcerebrumز and the wrinkled outer layer is the زcortexز the small projection at the back is called the زcerebellumز.‏

عندما قام رجال بدراسة الدماغ استخدموا اللغة اللاتينية واليونانية لذلك سميت اجزاء من الدماغ باسماء لاتينية ويونانية, فالدماغ نفسه دعي (سيربرم) (المخ), والطبقة الخارجية المتجعدة بالكورتكس (القشرة الخارجية) ونتوء في الخلف يدعى سيربلوم (المخيخ).‏

The cortex, about ثلاثة or أربعة m m think, encloses the two notable parts of the brain-the cerebal hemispheres. These almost but not quite mirror-image of one another, together constitute the cerebrum, and each hemisphere in turn is divided into lobes.‏

ان القشرة الخارجية التي تبلغ سماكتها ثلاثة الى أربعة ملم, تحيط بجزئين أساسيين من الدماغ هما نصفا كرة المخ, اللذان لا يتطابقان مع بعضهما بشكل تام, وكلاهما يشكلان المخ, وكل نصف مقسوم بدوره الى فصوص.‏

At the front, the frontal lobe, at the side, the temporal lobe, on the top, the parietal lobe, and at back of the head, the occipital lobe.‏

ففي الأمام, الفص الجبهي, وعلى الجانب الفص الصدغي, وعلى القمة الفص الجداري, وفي خلف الرأس الفص القفوي.‏

Each lobe is associated with different function.‏

وكل فص له مهمة مختلفة.‏

The two hemispheres are joined by thick whitish fibres, the corpus callosum, near them are the lobe which is concerned with emotion and the egg-shaped thalamus near the centre of the brain, below the latter is the hypothalamus which is responsible for body temperature. All these contitute the forebrain.‏

يرتبط نصفا كرة المخ بنسيج ليفي سميك ضارب للبياض, يدعى الجسم الثفني, وبالقرب منهما يقع الفص المعني بالمشاعر, أما السرير البصري الذي له شكل بيضوي فيقع قرب مركز الدماغ, وتحت الأخير يوجد الهايبوتلاموس المسؤول عن حرارة الجسم. وكل تلك الفصوص تشكل مقدمة الدماغ.‏

The midbrain is much smaller, among its duties are responses to sight and sound and control of sleeping and waking.‏

إن الدماغ المتوسط أكثر صغراً, ومن بين وظائفه الاستجابات للصوت والضوء والتحكم بالنوم والاستيقاظ.‏

The hindbrain includes the cerebellum (involved in the management of movement)‏

and the tiny lumps and bumps which have function too numerous to mention.‏

يضم الدماغ الخلفي المخيخ (الذي يشهجر في إدارة الحركات) ونتوءات صغيرة ونتوءات لها وظائف هامة جداً في اعطاء الاشارات.‏

Midbrain and hindbrain are grouped together and called the brain stem.‏

إن التقاء الدماغ المتوسط والخلفي يشكل ما يسمى بجذع المخ.‏

Connecting the brain stem to the rest of the body is the spinal cord.‏

ارتباط جذع المخ مع بقية الجسد يتم عن طريق الحبل الشوكي.‏

Parts of the spinal cord have their own function.‏

لكل جزء من الحبل الشوكي وظائفه الخاصة.‏

It contains fibres which connect the brain to muscles and sense organs throughout the body.‏

ويضم الحبل الشوكي نسيجا ليفيا يصل الدماغ بكل من العضلات والحواس في الجسم.‏

Corpora Quadrigemina

The corpora quadrigemina ("quadruplet bodies") are four solid optic lobes on the dorsal side of cerebral aqueduct, where the superior posterior pair are called the superior colliculi and the inferior posterior pair are called the inferior colliculi. The four solid optic lobes help to decussate several fibres of the optic nerve. However some fibers also show ipsilateral arrangement (i.e. they run parallel on the same side without decussating.) The superior colliculus is involved with saccadic eye movements; while the inferior is a synapsing point for sound information. The trochlear nerve comes out of the posterior surface of the midbrain, below the inferior colliculus.

Cerebral Peduncle

The cerebral peduncles are paired structures, present on the ventral side of cerebral aqueduct, and they further carry tegmentum on the dorsal side and cresta or pes on the ventral side, and both of them accommodate the corticospinal tract fibres, from the internal capsule (i.e ascending + descending tracts = longitudinal tract.) the middle part of cerebral peduncles carry substantia nigra (also called "Black Matter") which is a type of basal nucleus. It is the only part of the brain that carries melanin pigment.

Between the peduncles is the interpeduncular fossa, which is a cistern filled with cerebrospinal fluid. The occulomotor nerve comes out between the peduncles, and the trochlear nerve is visible wrapping around the outside of the peduncles.

Cross-Section Through the Midbrain

The midbrain is usually sectioned at the level of the superior and inferior colliculi.

A cross-section at the level of the superior colliculus shows the red nucleus, the nuclei of the oculomotor nerve (and associated Edinger-Westphal nucleus), as well as the substantia nigra.

The substantia nigra is still present at inferior colliculus level. Also apparent are the trochlear nerve nucleus, and the decussation of the superior cerebellar peduncles.

The cerebral aqueduct runs through the midbrain, and is the communication between the third and fourth ventricle.

As a mnemonic the mesencephalic cross-section resembles a bear (or teddybear) upside down with the two red nuclei as the eyes and the crus cerebri as the ears.
