جزيرة ثبات
جزيرة الثبات island of stability هومصطلح يستخدم في الفيزياء النووية, والذى يصف إمكانية حتىقد يكون للعنصر ""رقم سحري"" معين ثابت للروتونات والنيتورنات. وهذا يفترض أن يسمح لنظائر معينة لتكون أكثر ثباتا عن النظائر الأخرى, وبالتالىقد يكون لها إضمحلال أبطأ.
تم عرض فكرة جزيرة الثبات عن طريق جلين تي. سيبورج. بإفتراض حتى نواة الذرة مبنية من أغلفة بطريقة مماثلة للأغلفة الإلكترونية في الذرات. وفى الحالتين تكون الأغلفة تعبير عن مجموعة من الكوانتم مستويات طاقة قريبة من بعضها. مستويات الطاقة من الكوانتم التى تكون في غلافين مختلفين سيكونا مفصولين بفارق طاقة كبير نسبيا. وعلى ذلك عندما يتم مليء مستويات الطاقة بالنيترونات والبروتونات لغلاف معين في النواة, فإن كاقة الترابط لل نوكليون ستصل إلى حد أدني وعلى هذا فإن الهجريب المعين سيكون له عمر أطول من أقرب نظير لا يوجد به أغلفة ممتلئة.
سيكون للغلاف الممتليء "رقم سحري" من البروتونات والنيوترونات. أحد الأرقام السحرية للنيترونات 184, وبعض المطابقات لعدد البروتونات هى 114, 120 ، 126 : مما يعنى حتى أكثر النظائر ثباتا سيكون أنون كواديوم-298, أنون بينيليوم-304, أنون هيكسيوم-310. ولم يتم إنتاج أيا من هذه النظائر. نظائر الأنون كواديوم, والذى له 114 بروتون ولكن أقل من 184 نيوترون, تم تصنيعه ويضمحل أبطأ من أقرب العناصرفى الجدول الدوري.
عمر النصف للنظائر الكبيرة
المصطلح "ثابت بالتحديد" بالمقارنة بعمر النصف للعناصر الأخف أوالأثقل قليلا, عمر النصف للعناصر في جزيرة الثبات متسقط لها حتى تقاس بأجزاء من الثانية, أومن الممكن حتى تقاس بالأيام, على أنه توجد بعض الإحتمالات النظرية التى تتضمن فترات أكثر من ذلك.

(Note that for elements 109-118 the longest-lived known isotope is always the heaviest one discovered, making it likely that there are still longer-lived isotopes among the undiscovered heavier ones)
