آكـل السمك Loon نوع من الطيور المائية ذات جسم أملس يساعدها على السباحة والغطس ولديها كذلك ذيل قصير وقدم مكفف كأقدام الإوز حتى أنه يظهر مثل البط الكبير عندما يظهر فوق الماء. ويستخدم هذا الطائر منقاره المدبب في صيد السمك. وفي بعض الأحيان يطلق عليها اسم الطيور الغطاسة؛ حيث تستطيع حتى تصيد في المياه العميقة.

الوصف

وهناك أربعة أجناس من آكل السمك وجميعها تسكن في الجزء الشمالي من نصف الكرة الأرضية الشمالي. ويوجد آكل السمك الشائع ويطلق عليه اسم الغطاس الشمالي العظيم، في الصيف حول البحيرات المنعزلة والأنهار التي تمتد من شمالي الولايات المتحدة وحتى دائرة القطب الشمالي. وطوله حوالي 45 سم وجناحاه وريش ظهره أسود اللون، وبه بقع بيضاء. أما ريش الرأس والرقبة فتتميز باللون الأخضر والأسود اللامع، والرقبة مخططة باللون الأبيض، وصياحه الغريب له صدى يرن فوق الماء في الليل مما دفع بعض الشعوب إلى تشبيه الشخص المخبول به. ويشبه آكل السمك ذوالمنقار الأصفر آكل السمك الشائع ولكنه أكبر حجمًا ويعيش في الشمال البعيد فقط.

أما آكل السمك القطبي فلديه عنق بنفسجى يميل إلى السواد. وهناك أيضًا آكل السمك ذوالعنق الأحمر.
