  • Sepúlveda argues that the war against the Indians is not only lawful but recommendable because it is legitimate in the light of four arguments: the gravity of the Indian crimes (idolatry, sins against nature), the grossness of their intelligence, the needs of the faith, their subjection facilitating the preaching, the evils they inflict on one another (sacrifices).
  • The controversy turns to the advantage of Las Casas (his arguments are in the interest of the monarch who wants to remove the conquerors from the ability to treat the Indians as they please, to be able to submit them directly, in the name of the Church). The kings of Spain no longer want to be called "conquest" discoveries. At the head of the Council of the Indies , they place men who must lead the populations "peacefully and charitably".
