In the strictest definition of illuminated manuscript, only manuscripts with gold or silver, like this miniature of Christ in Majesty from the Aberdeen Bestiary (folio 4v), would be considered illuminated.

المخطوطات المذهـّبة illuminated manuscript هي مخطوطات يضاف للنص فيها تزيين، مثل حروف أولى مزينة، إطارات هامشية والتصويرات المنمنمة. In the most strict definition of the term, an illuminated manuscript only refers to manuscripts decorated with gold or silver, but in both common usage and modern scholarship, the term is now used to refer to any decorated or illustrated manuscript from the Western traditions. Comparable Far Eastern works are always described as painted, as are Mesoamerican works. Islamic manuscripts are usually referred to as illuminated but can also be classified as painted.

ظل تزيين المخطوطات بالرسوم والنقوش الصغيرة بالفضة المذابة والمضى المذاب، وبالمداد الملون، فناً محبوباً يوائم تقوى الأديرة وجوها الهادئ. وقد بلغ هذا الفن ذروته في بلاد الغرب في خلال القرن الثالث عشر، شأنه في هذا شأن كثير من أوجه النشاط في العصور الوسطى، ولم يبلغ بعدئذ في وقت من الأوقات ما بلغه في خلال القرن من دقة وابتكار وكثرة، فقد حلت في ذلك العهد محل الصور والكسى الجامدة، والألوان الخضراء والحمراء القاسية التي كانت سائدة في القرن الحادي عشر، حلت محلها بالتدريج أشكال رشيقة رقيقة في ألوان جمة العدد، على أرضية زرقاء أومضىية، وغلبت صور العذراء على هذه النقوش، كما أخذت من ذلك الوقت تكثر في الكنائس الكبرى. ولقد أتلفت خط كثيرة في العصور المظلمة، وتضاعف قيمة ما بقي منها لأنها كانت في نصها وفنها خيطاً رفيعاً من خيوط الحضارة إذا صح هذا التعبير(11). وكان الناس في تلك الأيام يعتزون بخط الترانيم، وبالأناجيل، والتراتيل، وكتل القداس، وخط الصلوات، وأدعية الساعات، ويحسبونها الأدوات الحية التي تنقل إليهم الوي الإلهي، ولمقد يكونوا يرون حتى أي مجهود يبذل في تزينها الزينة اللائقة بها أكثر مما تستحق. فكان الواحد منهم يبذل يوماً كاملاً في كتابة الحرف الأول من حدثة، وأسبوعاً كاملا في كتابة عنوان صفحة ، ولا يرى في هذا خروجاً على المعقول، وقد وقع في عام 986 حتى أقسم هارتكر Hartker أحد رهبان القديس Gall حتى يظل ما بقي من حياته الدنيوية داخل جدران أربعة، ولعله كان يتسقط انتهاء العالم ذلك القرن. وظل في صومعته الصغيرة حتى توفي بعد خمسة عشر عاماً من دخولها، وفيها زين بالصور والنقوش تراتيل القديس جول(12).

وكان فن المنظور وعمل القوالب وقتئذ أقل شأناً مما كانا عليه أيام ازدهارهما في عصر الكارولنجيين، فقد كان أصحاب النقوش الصغيرة يعنون بعمق اللون وبهائه، وازدحام الصور وحيويتها أكثر من عنايتهم بأن يخدعوا الناظر حتى يظن حتى ما أمامه فضاء ذوثلاثة أبعاد. وكانت أكثر موضوعاته تؤخذ من الكتاب المقدس، أومن الأناجيل غير القانونية، أومن أقاصيص القديسين، ولكن صوراً للنبات والحيوان كانت تستخدم أحياناً في تلك الزينة، وكان يسر صاحبها حتى يصور نباتات وحيوانات خيالية كما يصور نباتات وحيوانات حقيقية. وكانت القواعد الكنسية المفروضة على الموضوعات وطريقة معالجتها في الخط المقدسة نفسها أقل دقة وتحديداً في الغرب منها في الشرق، وكان يسمح للمصور حتى ينتقل ويلهوا حراً في مجاله الضيق. وكانت رؤوس بشرية مركبة على أجسام حيوانات، ورؤوس حيوانات على أجسام بشرية، وكان قرد في زي راهب، وقرد يختبر في وقار كوقار الطبيب قنينة ملآى بالبول، وموسيقى يطرب سامعيه يحك فكي حمار - كانت هذه هي الموضوعات التي ازدان بها كتاب صلوات ساعات العذراء(13). ونشأت نصوص غير هذه مقدسة ودنسة، واتخذت لها مكاناً في مناظر الصيد، أوالبرجاس، أوالحرب، وكان من الصور التي اشتمل عليها كتاب ترانيم في القرن الثالث عشر صورة تمثل داخل مصرف إيطالي، ذلك حتى العالم الدنيوي، وقد استفاق من رهبة الأبدية، أخذ يغزوأرباض الحياة الدينية.

وكانت الأديرة الإنجليزية موفورة الإنتاج في هذا الفن السلمي، فقد أخرجت مدرسة أنجيليا الشرقية خط مزامير واسعة الشهرة: منها كتاب محفوظ في مخطة بروكسل، وآخر (الأورمبزي Ormbsy ) في أكسفورد، وثالث (القديس أومر Omer) في المتحف البريطاني، ولكن خير ما أنتجه هذا الفن كان في فرنسا، فقد بدأت خط التراتيل التي زينت للويس التاسع طرازاً من النقوش الجامعة المركزة، وتقسما إلى مدليات داخل إطارات، نقلت بلا ريب عن زجاج الكنائس الملون. واشهجرت الأراضي الوطيئة في هذه الحركة، فبلغ رهبان ليبج وغنت في فن تزيين الخط بعض ما بلغه فن النحت في أمين Amiens وريمس Reime من الشعور الحماسي والرشاقة الفياضة، وأخرجت أسبانيا أعظم آية مفردة من آيات هذا الفن في القرن الثالث عشر في كتاب ترانيم للعذراء هوتسابيح (ألفونسوالعاشر) الملك الحكيم (حوالي عام 1280). وإن نقوشه الصغيرة البالغ عددها 1226 نقشاً لتشهد بما كان يبذل في خط العصور الوسطى من كد وإخلاص. ولا حاجة إلى القول بأن هذه الخط كانت خط خط كما كانت خط تصوير، وكان الفنان الواحد في بعض الأحيان ينسخ ويؤلف النصوص ويخطها ثم يرسم النقوش بيده. وإن الإنسان ليتردد، إذا أراد حتى يحكم على الكثير من الخط، أيهما أجمل زينتها أونصها. إلا إننا قد خسرنا بالطباعة الشيء الكثير.

The following steps outline the detailed labor involved to create the illuminations of one page of a manuscript:

1) Silverpoint drawing of the design were executed

2) Burnished gold dots applied

3) The application of modulating colors

4) Continuation of the previous three steps in addition to the outlining of marginal figures

5) The penning of a rinceaux appearing in the border of a page

6) The final step, the marginal figures are painted

Paints

The medieval artist's palette was broad; a partial list of pigments is given below. In addition, unlikely-sounding substances such as urine and earwax were used to prepare pigments.

الأحمر	Insect-based colors, including: Carmine, also known as cochineal, where carminic acid from the Dactylopius coccus insect is mixed with an aluminum salt to produce the dye; Crimson, also known as kermes, extracted from the insect Kermes vermilio; and Lac, a scarlet resinous secretion of a number of species of insects. Chemical- and mineral-based colors, including: Red lead, chemically lead tetroxide, Pb₃O₄, found in nature as the mineral minium, or made by heating white lead; Vermilion, chemically mercury sulfide, HgS, and found in nature as the mineral cinnabar; Rust, chemically hydrated ferric oxide, Fe₂O₃·n H₂O, or iron oxide-rich earth compounds.
الأصفر	Plant-based colors, such as: Weld, processed from the Reseda luteola plant; Turmeric, from the Curcuma longa plant; and Saffron, rarely due to cost, from the Crocus sativus. Mineral-based colors, including: Ochre, an earth pigment that occurs as the mineral limonite; and Orpiment, chemically arsenic trisulfide, As₂S₃.
الأخضر	Verdigris, chemically cupric acetate, Cu(OAc)₂·(H₂O)₂, made historically by boiling copper plates in vinegar; Malachite, a mineral found in nature, chemically basic copper carbonate, Cu₂CO₃·(OH)₂; and China green, a plant-based pigment extracted from ) berries.
الأزرق	Plant-based substances such as: Woad, produced from the leaves of the plant Isatis tinctoria; Indigo, derived from the plant Indigofera tinctoria; and Turnsole, also known as folium, a dyestuff prepared from the plant Crozophora tinctoria. Chemical- and mineral-based colors, including: Ultramarine, made from the minerals lapis lazuli or azurite; and Smalt, now known as cobalt blue.
الأبيض	White lead, chemically basic lead carbonate, 2PbCO₃·Pb(OH)₂, and historically made by corroding sheets of lead with vinegar, and covering that with decaying matter, such as dung, to provide the necessary carbon dioxide for the chemical reaction; and Chalk, chemically calcium carbonate, CaCO₃.
الأسود	Carbon, from sources such as lampblack, charcoal, or burnt bones or ivory; Sepia, from the ink produced by the cuttlefish, usually for an escape mechanism; and Iron gall ink, where in medieval times iron nails would be boiled in vinegar; the resulting compound would then be mixed with an extract of oak apple (oak galls).
المضىي	Gold leaf, gold hammered extremely thin, or gold powder, bound in gum arabic or egg; the latter is called shell gold.
الفضي	Silver, either silver leaf or powdered, as with gold; and Tin leaf, also as with gold.
