الحركة الإلغائية Abolition movement نشاط سقط في القرن الثامن عشر والتاسع عشر الميلاديين في الدول الأوروبية لإنهاء تجارة الرق. وقع معظم النشاط الإلغائي في بريطانيا والولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، لكن ظلت الحركات الداعية للرقِّ تعمل في بعض البلاد الغربية الأخرى أيضًا.

Lord Mansfield (1705-1793), whose opinion in Somersett's Case (1772) was widely taken to have held that slavery was illegal in إنگلترة.

عمل نشطاء الحركة الإلغائية في بريطانيا لإنهاء حركة تجارة الرق العالمية وتحرير العبيد الذين يُستَخدمون بصورة واسعة في المستعمرات البريطانية. كان قلّة من العبيد يسخّرون في بريطانيا نفسها، لكنْ ظل العبيد يُستَخدمون بصورة واسعة في المستعمرات البريطانية. وبعمل تجارة الرقيق، استطاع الكثيرون تكوين ثروات طائلة. ومن هنا بدأت الحركة ضد تجارة الرقيق في بريطانيا مع المنشقين من أمثال جون ولكسس، وذلك في ستينيات وسبعينيات القرن الثامن عشر والذي ارتقى بأسباب الحرية للعبيد، كما أنّ الحركة الدينية المعروفة بحركة الإصلاحيين، وخاصة الكويكرز، كان لها دور كبير في إرساء الحملة في بريطانيا، فقد أسسوا عام 1787م جمعية بقصد إلغاء تجارة الرقيق، وقد أرست تلك الجمعية نادىئم الحركة في بريطانيا.

Ignatius Sancho (c1729-1780) gained fame in his time as "the extraordinary Negro". To 18th-century British abolitionists, he became a symbol of the humanity of Africans and immorality of the slave trade.

عُمِّمَت كثير من العرائض والالتماسات ضد الرق، وجُمِعَت آلاف التوقيعات من جميع أنحاء بريطانيا. أوفدت التوقيعات إلى البرلمان احتجاجًا على الاسترقاق. وكان المتحدث الرسمي للحركة داخل البرلمان هووليم ويلبارفورس.

أصبحت الحملة ضد الرق في بداية التسعينيات من القرن الثامن عشر الميلادي موضوعًا رئيسيًا في بريطانيا، وأُجيز قانون عام 1807م في البرلمان يُلغي تجارة الرق في بريطانيا. لكنّ تجارة الرقِّ بقيت على حالها في المستعمرات البريطانية، وبحلول منتصف العشرينيات من القرن التاسع عشر الميلادي، نشطت الحملة لإلغاء تجارة الرق في بريطانيا. كان هناك ثلاث ثورات عبيد كبرى في المستعمرات البريطانية بجزر الهند الغربية: باربادوس في عام 1816م وديميرارا في عام 1823م وجامايكا في عام 1831م.

Olaudah Equiano (c1745-1797) was one of the most prominent people of African heritage involved in the British debate for the abolition of the slave trade.

كانت الحركة ضد تجارة الرقيق في بريطانيا قوية جدًا على مرِّ العشرينيات من القرن التاسع عشر الميلادي، وفي عام 1838م وتأسيسًا على مشروع قانون صدر في البرلمان عام 1833م، فإن ثلاثة أرباع مليون عبد في المستعمرات البريطانية تَمّ تحريرهم نهائيًا.

بدأت الحركة ضد تجارة الرقيق بالولايات المتحدة الأمريكية إبان حقبة الاستعمار. أدان الكويكرز في بنسلفانيا خلال الثمانينيات من القرن السابع عشر الميلادي الاسترقاق من منطلقٍ أخلاقي. وأدان الرقَّ مختلفُ قادة الحركة الثورية الأمريكية بنهاية القرن الثامن عشر الميلادي ومنهم توماس جيفرسون وباتريك هنري.

قادت جمعية الاستعمار الأمريكي التي أُنشئت عام 1817م احتجاجات على الاسترقاق في أول القرن التاسع عشر الميلادي. وحاولت هذه الجمعية حتى تبعث العبيد الذين تحرروا إلى ليبيريا، وهي بلد يقع على الساحل الغربي لإفريقيا، وفي عام 1822م، بدأ عضوجماعة الإلغاء وليم لويد قاريسون إصدار صحيفته ليبريتر (المحرر)، وفي عام 1831م، نادى بالحرية الفورية للعبيد. ساندت الجمعية الأمريكية لمقاومة الرق التي تأسست عام 1833م حملة قاديسون العنيفة.

قامت النساء كذلك بدور مهم؛ فقد نظمت لوكريشيا موت والأختان سارة وأنجلينا قريمكييه مجموعات لمناهضة الاسترقاق، وخطبن في الناس. التحق كثيرون من الأحرار السود بجماعة الإلغاء، ودخلت الحركة فترة جديدة في عام 1840م حين عمل بعض قادتها بالسياسة، وأسسوا حزب الحرية.

رُشِّحَ جيمس بيرني المولود بكنتاكي ـ وهومالك رقيق ـ لمنصب الرئيس عن الحزب مرتين: في عام 1840م وعام 1844م.

نادى الإلغائيون بعد حتى بدأت الحرب الأهلية سنة 1861م إلى موضوع الوحدة، وكانوا قد ابتهجوا حين حرَّر الرئيس أبراهام لنكولن وثيقة تحرير العبيد في أول يناير عام 1863م، معلناً حرية العبيد في معظم أنحاء الجنوب. ألغى التعديل الثالث عشر لدستور الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية عام 1865م الاسترقاق في طول البلاد وعرضها.
