قنطورس القريب أوالقنطور الأقرب Proxima Centauri هونجم سماوى قزم أحمر له سطوع من القدر الحادى عشر. يبعد عن الكرة الأرضية في حدود 4.22 سنة ضوئية فهوالأقرب الى المنظومة الشمسية أوإلينا من جميع النجوم السماوية الأخرى. وفى الوقت نفسه هوالنجم الأقرب الى الأرض بين ثلاثة نجوم تؤلف منظومة الألفا القنطوري في قنطورس (كوكبة) حيث يقع أقرب عشر السنة الضوئية تقريبا من النجمين الرفيقين الأخريين . لايرى هذا النجم الأقرب إلا بتلسكوب قوى .
الرصد
النجم قنطور الأقرب هوقزم أحمر وطيفه من التصنيف M ، أي أنه يتبع نجوم النسق الأساسي. وتصنيفه M5.5 يعني أنه من النجوم القزمة من التصنيف M المتقدمة في العمر وتبلغ درجة حرارة سطحه 3040 كلفن والتي تعتبر باردة بالنسبة لحرارة سطح الشمس التي تصل إلى 5700 كلفن .
ونظرا لقربه منا بمسافة 4.2 سنة ضوئية فقد استطاع مرصد بارانال VLT قياس قطره عام 2002 وعينه بنحو1.02 ثانية قوسية ، مما يعنا حتى قطره يبلغ 200.000 كيلومتر ، هذا يعادل نحوسبع قطر الشمس أوقطر كوكب المشتري 1.5 مرة .
وبالرغم من قربه للأرض يبلغ قدره الظاهري 11 ، وهذا أضعف 100 مرة عن سطوع النجوم التي يمكن رؤيتها بالعين المجردة والتي يبلغ قدرها الظاهريستة . أما قدره المطلق (وهوضياؤه من على بعدعشرة فرسخ فلكي) فيبلغ 5.15. ولوافترضنا حتى قنطور الأقرب اتخذ مسقط الشمس لظهر 1/50 من مساحتها . ولكنا لا نرى الكواكب ومن ضمنها الزهراء نظرا لضعف ضيائه . يظهر متكوره الملون أنه يحتوي على المغنسيوم.
تصدر من قنطور الأقرب رياح نجمية ، وتؤدي إلى فقدانه لجزء من مادته وهي تبلغ نحو20 % مما تصدره الشمس من رياح شمسية .
السمات
In 2002, optical interferometry with the Very Large Telescope (VLTI) found that the angular diameter of Proxima Centauri was 1.02 ± 0.08 milliarcsec. Because its distance is known, the actual diameter of Proxima Centauri can be calculated to be about 1/7 that of the Sun, or 1.5 times that of Jupiter. The star's estimated mass is 12.3% , or 129 Jupiter masses (MJ). The mean density of a main-sequence star increases with decreasing mass, and Proxima Centauri is no exception: it has a mean density of 56.8نطقب:E-sp kg/m3 (56.8 g/cm3), compared with the Sun's mean density of 1.411نطقب:E-sp kg/m3 (1.411 g/cm3).

Proxima Centauri b is an Earth-sized planet orbiting the star at a distance of roughly 0.05 AU (7,500,000 kم) and an orbital period of approximately 11.2 Earth days. Its estimated mass is at least 1.3 times that of the Earth. Moreover, the equilibrium temperature of Proxima b is estimated to be within the range where water could exist as liquid on its surface; thus, placing it within the habitable zone of Proxima Centauri.

Prior to this discovery, multiple measurements of the star's radial velocity constrained the maximum mass that a detectable companion to Proxima Centauri could possess. The activity level of the star adds noise to the radial velocity measurements, complicating detection of a companion using this method. In 1998, an examination of Proxima Centauri using the Faint Object Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope appeared to show evidence of a companion orbiting at a distance of about 0.5 AU. However, a subsequent search using the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 failed to locate any companions.Astrometric measurements at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory appear to rule out a Jovian companion with an orbital period of 2−12 years.
Proxima Centauri, along with Alpha Centauri A and B, was among the "Tier 1" target stars for NASA's now-canceled Space Interferometry Mission (SIM), which would theoretically have been able to detect planets as small as three Earth masses (M⊕) within two AU of a "Tier 1" target star.
