برتراند أرثر وليام رسل (18 مايو1872 - 2 فبراير 1970) فيلسوف ورياضي ومحرر إنجليزي يعد من أعظم الفلاسفة حصل على جائزة نوبل عام 1950 بالإضافة إلى نوط الإستحقاق ذوالقيمة الكبيرة والذى قلده إياه الملك جورج السادس عام 1949 وجائزة سوننج من جامعة كوبنهاجن عام 1960. كما كان ناشطا بارزا ضد الحرب وضد الامبريالية كما شجع التجارة الحرة بين الشعوب. يعدّ من أشهر فلاسفة القرن العشرين، كما وُصِف بأنه أبرز فهماء المنطق الذين ظهروا منذ عصر الفيلسوف الإغريقي أرسطو.
قدَّم راسل أعظم إسهاماته في المنطق الصوري ونظرية الفهم، وإن كان تأثيره يتجاوز هذين المجالين؛ إذ طوَّر أسلوبًا نثريًا يتسم بدرجة مدهشة من الوضوح وسرعة البديهة وجيشان العاطفة، وحصل على جائزة نوبل للأدب عام 1950م.
أصبح راسل شخصية مؤثِّرة ومثيرة للجدل في القضايا الاجتماعية والسياسية والتعليمية، وكان مباشرًا في دعوته للسلام، ونادى لانتهاج مواقف ليبرالية إزاء الجنس والزواج ووسائل التعليم، وكان من منتقدي الحرب العالمية الأولى (1914م - 1918م). سجن عام 1918م بسبب تصريحات ضارة بالعلاقات البريطانية الأمريكية، ثم ولج السجن مرة أخرى عام 1961م بسبب التحريض على العصيان المدني في حملة تطالب بنزع السلاح النووي.
تميز بكونه ناقدا ساخرا بالإضافة إلى كونه عالم إجتماعى دقيق خط ما يزيد عن المائة كتاب والكثير من الموضوعات في الفلسفة وفهم النس وفهم الإجتماع والسياسة والدين والأخلاق والجنس. توفي وعمره حوالي المئة عام في سنة 1970.
من أعماله مبادى الرياضيات وتاريخ الفلسفة الغربية ومشكلات الفلسفة ومن أقواله "إن مبرر إحترام الأطفال لأبائهم لا يعد أقوى من ذلك الخاص بإحترام الوالدين لأطفالهم فيما عدا أنه عندماقد يكون الأطفال صغاراًقد يكون الأباء أقوى من الأطفال".
النشأة
ولد راسل بالقرب من تريليك بويلز، شمال تشِــبْستو، ومسماه الكامل برتراند آرثر وليم راسل؛ وهومن أسرة عريقة ونبيلة. وفي عام 1931م ورث لدى وفاة أخيه الأكبر لقب العائلة، فأصبح إيرل راسل.
أعوامه الأخيرة ووفاته
برتراند رسل نشر سيرته الذاتية في ثلاث مجلدات في 1967, 1968 وفي 1969. وبالرغم من ضعف صحته آنذاك, فقد ظل صافي الفكر حتى النهاية.
موقفه من إسرائيل والعرب
في 31 يناير 1970 أدان "العدوان الإسرائيلي في الشرق الأوسط"، قائلاً "كثيراً ما يـُنطق لنا أنه يجب علينا التعاطف مع إسرائيل لما عاناه اليهود في اوروبا على يد النازي. ... إلا حتى ما تقوم به إسرائيل اليوم لا يمكن السكوت عليه، وإن استجلاب فظائع الماضي لتبرير فظائع الحاضر هونفاق فادح". هذه العبارة قـُرئت في المؤتمر العالمي للبرلمانيين في القاهرة في ثلاثة فبراير 1970، مع ملاحظة تقول حتى رسل قد توفي في اليوم السابق.
توفي برتراند رسل الساعة 6.30 مساء 2 فبراير 1970 في منزله، Plas Penrhyn, في Penrhyndeudraeth, مريونث شاير, ويلز بسبب الإنفلونزا. وكان قد صارع ذلك السقم قبل ذلك في آخر ديسمبر 1969.

أعماله الفلسفية
الفلسفة التحليلية
قدم راسل أعظم إسهاماته للفلسفة والرياضيات في مطلع القرن العشرين، وأراد حتى يستمد جميع الرياضيات من المنطق، وبذلك أرساها على أساس متين. وتعاون راسل مع عالم الرياضيات والفيلسوف الإنجليزي ألفرد نورث وايتهد في مؤلفه الضخم المكون من ثلاثة أجزاء مبادئ الرياضيات (1910 - 1913م). وسعى في عمله هذا إلى إظهار حتى جميع الرياضيات البحتة تتوالد من مسلمات منطقية تمامًا، وأنها لا تستخدم سوى المفاهيم التي يمكن تعريفها بمصطلحات منطقية بحتة. ورغم حتى أفكاره نُقِّحت وطُوِّرت على أيدي فهماء الرياضيات من بعده، لكن أفكاره كانت المنطلق لكثير من الإنجازات الحديثة في فهم المنطق وقواعد الرياضيات.
وقدَّم راسل إسهامًا وافرًا في تاريخ الفلسفة بخط مثل: عرض نقدي لفلسفة ليبنتز (1900م)؛ تاريخ الفلسفة الغربية (1945م)، وعبر عن أفكاره الاجتماعية والسياسية في عدد من الأعمال؛ منها الديمقراطية الاجتماعية الألمانية (1896م)؛ سبل الحرية (1918م)؛ السلطة (1938م)؛ السلطة والفرد (1949م).
ألف راسل في الأخلاق والتعليم أعمالاً مؤثرة؛ مثل: الزواج والأخلاق (1929م)؛ اقتناص السعادة (1930م). ودوَّن راسل كتابات كثيرة عن حياته، منها سيرة ذاتية نشرت بين عامي 1967م و1969م.
قد صمدت أيضًا كتابات برتراند راسل في أخلاق الجنس على نحومدهش. وفي الحقيقة، فإن ما دعى وناضل لأجله راسل في يوم من الأيام، أصبح في يومنا هذا من البديهيات، كالحاجة لتوفير تثقيف جنسي حقيقي مثلًا، وأيضًا كالفكرة القائلة بأنه “من السخيف جدًا حتى نطلب من الناس حتى يدخلوا في علاقة أبدية من دون أدنى فهم بمدى توافقهم الجنسي مع شركائهم.” ومما لا يخفى على أحد حتى راسل قد حظي بالكثير من العشاق، ورغم ذلك، لم يكن ساعيًا وراء اللذة فقط أوممن يعتنقون الممضى النفعي فيها. لقد افترض حتى الأشخاص المتحضرين لا يتمكنون من الوصول لإشباع جنسي تام دون حب.
