هاينرش لويتپولد هـِملر (Heinrich Luitpold Himmler ؛ ألمانية: [ˈhaɪnʁɪç ˈluːɪtˌpɔlt ˈhɪmlɐ] ( listen) ؛7 أكتوبر 1900 إلى 23 مايو1945) كان Reichsführer of the Schutzstaffel (سرب الحماية، SS), وعضوقيادي في الحزب النازي (NSDAP) في ألمانيا. كان هملر واحداً من أقوى الرجال في ألمانيا النازية. قاد فرقة القوات الخاصة الألمانية والبوليس السري المعروف بالگستاپووأشرف على عمليات إبادة المدنيين في معسكرات الموت الألمانية.
وُلد بالقرب من مدينة ميونخ لعائلة متوسطة الدخل وكان أبوه ناظر مدرسة. التحق هيملر بالفوج الباڤاري الحادي عشر ولم تسجّل له أحداث عسكرية تذكر. وبعد الحرب العالمية الاولى، انظم لأحد الكتائب اليمينية المتطرفة وما أكثرها في ذاك الوقت والتي كانت ممتعضة ايما امتعاض من خسارة ألمانيا للحرب وقرروا الدفاع عن الحدود الألمانية من انتهاكات الجيش الأحمر والعمل على إجهاض أي تحركات شيوعية من داخل ألمانيا. وفي عام 1923، انظم هيملر للحزب النازي المتطرف وأوكل اليه هتلر قيادة القوات الخاصة المعنية بحمايته الشخصية "SS". وبتعيينه قائداً للقوات الخاصة، طوّر هيملر القوات الخاصة بشكل جيّد حتى أصبحت من أفضل الميليشيات المدربة عسكرياً. وفي الوقت الذي كان يترواح عدد القوات الخاصة 280 عنصر في عام 1929، وصل مجموع عناصر القوات الخاصة إلى 52،000 عام 1933. وكان هيملر يقوم على فحص جميع طلب التحاق في القوات الخاصة على حدة للتأكد من نقاء دم المتقدم للطلب حيث لم يرضى هتلر بعناصر القوات الخاصة الغير منتمين للعرق الآري.
ولم تكن القوات الخاصة "SS" هي الأكبر في الجيش الألماني، فقد سبقها في الحجم والقوة الكتيبة الضاربة والمعروفة بـ "SA". ووُفق هيملر بالتعاون مع "هرمان گورينگ"، الأب الروحي للگستاپومن إقناع هتلر من الخطر الذي يمثله تنامي قوة الـ "SA" واحتمال استعمال ال "SA" للإطاحة بهتلر ونظامه. اقتنع هتلر بخطر "رويهم"، قائد الـ "SA" ووافق على تصفيته جسدياً وهذا ما تم على يد هملر وگورنگ. أصبحت الساحة شاغرة لهيملر وأصبح الرجل الأوحد فيما يتعلق بالأجهزة الأمنية للرايخ الثالث. بل وعظمت قوة هيملر عندما آل جهاز البوليس السري، الگستاپوتحت إمرته.

Onستة June 1944 the Western Allied armies landed in northern France during Operation Overlord. In response, Army Group Upper Rhine (Heeresgruppe Oberrhein) group was formed to engage the advancing US 7th Army (under command of General Alexander Patch) والجيش الأول الفرنسي (بقيادة الجنرال Jean de Lattre de Tassigny) في منطقة الألزاس بحذا الضفة الغربية لنهر الراين. In late 1944, Hitler appointed Himmler commander-in-chief of Army Group Upper Rhine.

On 26 September 1944 Hitler ordered Himmler to create special army units, the Volkssturm ("People's Storm" أو"People's Army").
مفاوضات السلام
In early 1945, the German war effort was on the verge of collapse and Himmler's relationship with Hitler had deteriorated. Himmler considered independently negotiating a peace settlement. His masseur, Felix Kersten, who had moved to Sweden, acted as an intermediary in negotiations with Count Folke Bernadotte, head of the Swedish Red Cross. Letters were exchanged between the two men, and direct meetings were arranged by Walter Schellenberg of the RSHA.
