الأخوان رايت Wright brothers (أورفيل وويلبر رايت) مخترعان أمريكيان ينسب اليهما معظم المؤرخون إختراع أول طائرة والقيام بأول تجربة طيران ناجحة عن طريق اّلة أثقل من الهواء في 17 ديسمبر 1903.
وظل إنجاز الأخوين رايت غير معروف لمدة خمس سنوات. ومع ذلك استمرا في العمل بهدوء في تطوير اختراعهما. وكانا يؤمنان بأن الطائرات يفترض أن تحمل في النهاية المسافرين والبريد. وكانا يأملان بأن الطائرات من الممكن تمنع الحرب أيضًا.
النشأة
ولد ويلبر رايت في 16 أبريل 1867م في مغرسة تبعد 13كم عن نيوكاسل بولاية إنديانا، كما ولد أورفيل في 19 أغسطس 1871م في دايتون بولاية أوهايو، وتدرجا في التعليم حتى وصلا فترة التعليم الثانوي، لكنهما لم يحصلا على أية شهادات. وكانا مهتمين بالميكانيكا (الآلات) منذ الصغر.
وتوفي ويلبر بالتيفوئيد في 30 مايو1912م. واستمر أورفيل في العمل وحده إلى حتى تقاعد في 1915م، وتوفي في ثلاثة يناير 1948م.
والجدير بالذكر حتى المبادئ الأولية لطائرة الأخوين رايت مازالت تُستخدم في معظم الطائرات. وفي 1953م أطلق على النصب التذكاري الذي كان يسمى كيل ديفل هيل اسم النصب التذكاري القومي للأخوين رايت.
لقد ابتدأ الأخوان رايت بصورة عملية قرن الطيران ومهدا بإختراعهم لاول آلة تتحرك بمحرك دافع أثقل من جسم الإنسان, مهّدا لدخول قرن الطيران من باب واسع, وشهد القرن العشرين ومنذ ذلك اليوم من شتاء عام 1903 تقدماً هائلاً في حقل الطيران على مدى ما يقرب من 100 عام تطورت فيها الطائرات ودخلت عصر الإنتاج الصناعي بغزارة وتنوعت أحجامها وأشكالها ومهمامها والأعباء المكلفة بإنجازها لدرجة حتى محاولة جمع الطرازات التي انتجت في العالم ككل في كتاب أومؤلف واحد يعد ضرب من ضروب الخيال.
سيرة ذاتية
أورفيل رايت من مواليد عام 1871 وكان يشتغل صانع وميكانيكي وفني للدراجات الهوائية من أخيه ويلبور, أبدى الأخوان رايت اهتماماً بالطيران منذ نعومة اظافرهم. معززين بالخبرة الممتازة في مجال الميكانيك والإطلاع على العلوم التطبيقية والكثير من الولع بالطيران بدأ الاخوان رايت يعدون العدة بخطى ثابتة وبالكثير من التصميم والمثابرة لتحقيق الغاية التي كانوا بنشدون اليها وهي الإرتفاع في الهواء بجسم ذات أجنحة تكون فيها قوة الحمل مستمدة من محرك, وهي أولى المحاولات التي كانت تعتمد على جسم أثقل من الهواء كما ورد في بداية هذا الموضوع.
لقد هجر الاخوان رايت بتجربتهم تلك ونجاحهم التي خرجت الصحف الرئيسية في الولايات المتحدة في اليوم التالي تزف الخبر للعالم هجرا أرثاً دافئاُ لا يمكن نسيانه من التأريخ للطيران والروعة في النجاح والتألق ومتعة الشعور بتحقيق حلم راود الإنسان منذ حتى فتح عيناه على الطيور والنسور والكواسر وهي تجوب السماوات دونما تحقيق غايته. واليوم يمثل الأخوان رايت إرثاً عالمياً يحتفل بإنجازهم بشكل رسمي ويحتلان صفحات مشرّفة في التأريخ الأمريكي وطائرتهم التي لا تزال صورتها تملأ الطوابع والتذكارات والساحات العامة في الولايات المتحدة وعبر العالم كما ويمكن للناظر حتى يعاين طائرتهم التي تكاد تكون أشهر طائرة في العالم عن كثب في متحف العلوم والتكنولوجيا في مدينة كيتي هوك في ولاية نورث كارولاينا مسقط رأس الأخوان رايت حيث يحضرها الكثيرون حول العالم لمشاهدة أول طائرة حلقت في بداية القرن العشرين والتي دفعت بالطيران إلى المستوى التالي.

At left, 1901 glider flown by Wilbur (left) and Orville. At right, 1902 glider flown by Wilbur (right) and Dan Tate, their helper. Dramatic improvement in performance is apparent. The 1901 glider flies at a steep angle of attack due to poor lift and high drag. In contrast, the 1902 glider flies at a much flatter angle and holds up its tether lines almost vertically, clearly demonstrating a much better lift-to-drag ratio.
