جون ميلتون كيدج الابن John Milton Cage Jr. (م.خمسة سبتمبر 1912 - و. 12 أغسطي 1992) مؤلف موسيقي أمريكي وصاحب نظريات الموسيقى ومحرر وفنان.

حياته

كان جون كيدج دوما يتحدى فكرة الموسيقى فيستخدم العشوائية كأساس للتأليف، يستخدم الأدوات لإصدار أصوات جديدة ويدخل نطاق واسع من الأصوات في أعماله. كان يريد كسر الحاجز بين الفن والحياة "ليس يحضر النظام خارج الفوضى... لكن ببساطة يستيقظ للحياة التي نعيشها". أشهر أعماله "4’33" 1952، يحتاج من البيانوحتى يحمل غطاء البيانوثم لا يعزفه لمدة أربعة دقائق و33 ثانية - فالنقطة هي الكشف للجمهور عن استحالة الصمت التام والهجريز على ثراء الأصوات التي تحيط بهم. هذا الإبهام للفصل التقليدي بين الحياة العملية وقاعة الحفلات وصل لأقصى حده في عروض معينة حيث يجلس كيدج على المسرح يقلي المشروم - كان خبير ملحوظ في الفطريات، وعام 1958 فاز ب6000 دولار في برنامج مسابقات في التليفزيون الإيطالي وهويجيب عن أسئلة عن موضوع الفطريات.

في العشرينات من عمره تفهم كيدج مع الموسيقي هنري كويل، الذي خط بالعمل مقطوعات للبيانوحيث كان العازف ينقر ويطرق على الأوتار مباشرة. كما تفهم مع شونبرج وجدالهم حول الهارموني (حيث رأى كيدج أنه غير هام) ادى بشونبرج عن يقول عنه: "إنه ليس مؤلف، إنه مخترع عبقري". أعمال كيدج في الثلاثينيات أساسا للآلات الإيقاعية تعتمد على أنماط إيقاعية منظمة رقميا وتقترب من الموسيقى الشرقية اكثر من الغربية - وهوجانب آخر من تأثير كويل. عام 1938 طور أفكار كويل فبدأ يدخل أشياء مثل المفكات أوالخشب أوالورق في أوتار البيانوليصدر نطاق واسع من الأصوات. الكثير من موسيقاه المعبرة كانت مكتوبة لما سماه كيدج "البيانوالمجهز".

في اواخر الأربعينات تعرض موقف كيدج تجاه الموسيقى لتغيير عميق نتيجة دراسته للبوذية. في محاولة ليخلص موسيقاه من جميع مظاهر التعبير الذاتي والتعمد بدأ يدخل الصدفة كمبدأ موجه أولا في عملية التأليف ثم الأداء. "موسيقى التغييرات" 1951 هوالعمل الأساسي، وكان آخر مقطوعة محددة كاملة لكيدج، لكن الفها باستخدام العمليات بالصدفة. معظم أعماله العفوية كانت مكتوبة ليس بالتدوين الرقمي التقليدي لكن كتصميم بياني مذهل مرئيا ودائما غامض. وحيث صارت هذه الأعمال فوضوية وغير عقلانية بتزايد، طور كيدج أسلوب متبع خلال الستينات، رغم حتى الكثير من الموسيقيين زملائه مثل بيير بوليز رأوا حتى تأكيده على العشوائية كان طريق مسدود من الناحية التصورية. في آخر عشرين سنة من حياته، عاد كيدج للأساليب الاكثر نظاما في التأليف الموسيقي.

• The John Cage Music Manuscript Collection held by the Music Division of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts contains most of the composer's musical manuscripts, including sketches, worksheets, realizations, and unfinished works.
• The John Cage Papers are held in the Special Collections and Archives department of Wesleyan University's Olin Library in Middletown, Connecticut. They contain manuscripts, interviews, fan mail, and ephemera.
