جامعة أوكسفورد (The University of Oxford) تعدّ أقدم جامعة في العالم الغربي المتحدث بالإنجليزية، تقع في مدينة أكسفورد في إنجلترا.

بالرغم من عدم فهم التاريخ الدقيق لإنشاء الجامعة، فإن أصولها ترجع، على أقل تقدير، إلى القرن الحادي عشر. حيث يُروى أنه قامت أعمال شغب بين الفهماء وسكان المدينة في عام 1209 مما حدا ببعض فهماء أكسفورد إلى الفرار إلى بلدة كمبردج في الشمال الشرقي حيث أُسّست جامعة كمبردج هناك، والتي أصبحث منذ ذلك الوقت منافسًا قويًا لجامعة أكسفورد. وتعتبر هاتان الجامعتين من أفضل وأرقى الجامعات في المملكة المتحدة.

احتلت الجامعة حديثًا المركز الأول في تصنيفين من تصانيف الجامعات وهما ترتيب الگارديان وترتيب التايمز. وقد تصدرت أكسفورد هذا التصنيف الأخير للسنة الرابعة على التوالي. وعلى الرغم من المكانة المرموقة التي يحتلها هذان التصنيفان بناءً على معايير الترتيب المتبعة، فقد احتلت أكسفورد المركز الرابع في ترتيب التايمز للتعليم العالي والعاشر في ترتيب جامعة شنغهاي جياوتونگ.

جامعة أكسفورد هي أحد جامعات الأبحاث البريطانية في مجموعة رسل، وفي مجموعة كويمبرا وهي شبكة من الجامعات الأوروبية المتقدمة، وفي رابطة جامعات الأبحاث الأوروبية (LERU)، كما أنها عضوأساسي في منظمة اليوروپيوم.

التاريخ

The university was a centre of the Royalist Party during the English Civil War (1642–1649), while the town favoured the opposing Parliamentarian cause. Soldier-statesman Oliver Cromwell, chancellor of the university from 1650 to 1657, was responsible for preventing both Oxford and Cambridge from being closed down by the Puritans, who viewed university education as dangerous to religious beliefs. From the mid-18th century onward, however, the University of Oxford took little part in political conflicts.

Adjoining the Museum of Natural History is the Pitt Rivers Museum, founded in 1884, which displays the University’s archaeological and anthropological collections, currently holding over 500,000 items. It recently built a new research annexe; its staff have been involved with the teaching of anthropology at Oxford since its foundation, when as part of his donation General Augustus Pitt Rivers stipulated that the University establish a lectureship in anthropology.
