مبدأ الأيلولة أوسياسة انقضاء العهد doctrine of lapse كانت سياسة ضم يُعتقد حتى واضعها هواللورد دالهوسي، الذي كان الحاكم العام لـشركة الهند الشرقية في الهند بين 1848 و1856. وحسب المبدأ، فأي princely state أوterritory under the direct influence (paramountacy) of شركة الهند الشرقية البريطانية (the dominant imperial power in the subcontinent), as a vassal state under the British subsidiary system, would automatically be annexed if the ruler was either "manifestly incompetent or died without a male heir". The latter supplanted the long-established right of an Indian sovereign without an heir to choose a successor.[] In addition, the British decided whether potential rulers were competent enough. The doctrine and its application were widely regarded by many Indians as illegitimate.Dalhousie also annexed the state of awadh in 1856

مبدأ الأيلولة قبل دالهوسي
طبق دالهوسي مبدأ الأيلولة بحماس لضم الولايات الأميرية الهندية، ولكن السياسة لم تكن من اختراعه هووحده. فمحكمة مديري شركة الهند الشرقية صاغت ذلك في مطلع 1834. وتبعاً لتلك السياسة، فقد ضمت الشركة Mandvi في 1839، Kolaba وJalaun في 1840 وسورات في 1842.
