ولد مارڤن في مدينة نيويورك، والتحق بمدرسة فيلدستون ومدرسة برونكس العليا للعلوم. التحق بعد ذلك بأكاديمية فلپس في أندوڤر، مساتشوستس. عمل في البحرية الأمريكية من 1944-1945. حصل على البكالوريوس في الرياضيات من جامعة هارڤرد 1950 والدكتوراه في نفس المجال من جامعة پرنستون 1954. وفي كلية معهد تكنولجيا مساتشوستس منذ 1958. في 1959 أسس هووجون ماك كارثي معمل الذكاء الإصطناعي وعلوم الحاسوب في معهد تكنولوجيا مساتشوستس. يعمل حاليا أستاذ توشيبا في فنون الإعلام والعلوم، وأستاذ هندسة إلكترونيات وعلوم حاسب.
