التعقيد غير القابل للاختزال Irreducible complexity (IC) هوحجة يدفع به أنصار التصميم الذكي بأن بعض الأنظمة الحيوية معقدة بدرجة يستحيل معها حتى تكون قد تطورت من سلف أبسط، أو"أقل اكتمالاً"، عبر انتقاء طبيعي يعمل على سلسلة من الطفرات المفيدة المصادفة والحادثة طبيعياً. وهي واحدة من حجتين رئيسيتين يـُقصد منهما مساندة نظرية التصميم الذكي، والحجة الثانية هي التعقيد المحدد.
يعتبر التعقيد أونظام ما غير قابلية الإختزال إذا لم يكن من الممكن وصف ديناميكيته أوالتنبؤ بحركية نظام ما عن طريق دراسة نموذج مبسط مشتق منه أودراسة النموذج محليا local analysis
اقترح مايكل بيه الأنظمة المعقدة غير القابلة للاختزال في سياق التصميم الذكي وهويعهدها كالتالي:
... نظام فريد مكون من الكثير من الأجزاء المتفاعلة المترابطة مع بعضها بشكلٍ جيد والتي تساهم في الوظيفة الأساسية للنظام، بحيث إذا إزالة أي جزء من هذه الأجزاء سيؤدي إلى توقف النظام عن العمل. (بيه، الآلات الجزيئية: دعم تجريبي لاستنتاج التصميم)
استخدم بيه مصيدة الفئران كمثال توضيحي لهذا المفهوم. مصيدة الفئران مكونة من الكثير من البتر المتفاعلة مع بعضها البعض – القاعدة، الطعم، النابض، الماسك – ويجب حتى تكون جميع هذه البتر في مكانها حتى تعمل المصيدة. إذا إزالة إي من هذه الأجزاء يعطل عمل مصيدة الفئران. يؤكد مؤيدوالتصميم الذكي حتى الاصطفاء الطبيعي لا يمكن حتى يخلق أنظمة معقدة غير قابلة للاسترجاع، لأن الوظيفة الناتجة بعمل الاصطفاء الطبيعي تتواجد فقط عندما تكون جميع الأجزاء مجمعة. أمثلة بيه المزعومة حول الآليات البيولوجية المعقدة غير القابلة للاختزال تتضمن السوط الموجود في بكتريا E. coli، اندفاعات تخثر الدم، الأهداب، نظام المناعة التكيفي.
