دانيال وبستر Daniel Webster (1782 - 1852م). أشهر خطيب أمريكي، ورجل دولة. كسب شهرته الكبيرة نصيرًا لحكومة وطنية قوية. وظل الطلبة يستذكرون سطورًا مثيرة من خطبه لسنوات بعد موته، وألهمت أحاديثه، مثل الحرية والاتحاد؛ الآن وللأبد؛ كلٌ لا يتجزأ، كثيرًا من جنود الشمال أثناء الحرب الأهلية.
حياته المبكرة
ولد وبستر في سالزبوري (فرانكلين الآن) بنيوهامبشاير بالولايات المتحدة الأمريكية وتخرج في كلية دارتماوث، ثم تفهم القانون في بوسطن، وأصبح بعدئذ، محاميًا ناجحًا في بورتسماوث، بنيوهامبشاير. لم يؤيد وبستر في بداية عمله وجود حكومة قوية، وناصر حقوق الولايات، بدلاً من ذلك.
كانت بورتسماوث ميناءً بحريًا مزدهرًا، حتى أمر رئيس الولايات المتحدة توماس جيفرسون بمنع الصادرات من الولايات المتحدة، ودمرتسيي حرب 1812م، معظم تجارتها الخارجية. وانحاز وبستر لمُلاك السفن المحليين، وعارض ضرائب الحرب، عندما كان عضوًا اتحاديًا في مجلس النواب، من 1813م إلى 1817م، وساعد على إبطال مشروع قانون خاص بالتجنيد الإلزامي. ونطق إذا على حكومات الولايات حتى تتدخل لحماية مواطنيها من الحكومة القومية.
انتقل وبستر إلى بوسطن في 1816م، وكانت مصانع الغزل والنسيج الجديدة تبرز للوجود بطول أنهار نيوإنجلاند، حيث توجد طاقة منتجة من المياه، وأصبحت الصناعة في معظم الشمال الشرقي أكثر أهمية من الشحن بالسفن، ورغب أصحاب المصانع في وجود حكومة قومية قوية تستطيع مساعدة العمل التجاري.

غيَّر وبستر أفكاره عن السلطة القومية وحقوق الولايات، لأنه صديقٌ ومحامٍ لرجال الأعمال الشماليين، ترافع في قضية كلية دارتماوث ضد مطلب نيوهامبشاير للسيطرة على الكلية، وكسب حكم المحكمة العليا للولايات المتحدة، وتمسك في قضية أخرى شهيرة بدستورية ترخيص الحكومة الفيدرالية لمصرف قومي، وأصر على حتى تعريفة الحماية الجمركية غير دستورية، وهوممثل لماساشوسيتس في مجلس نواب الولايات المتحدة في الفترة من 1823م إلى 1827م، لكنه أصبح محامي الوطن البليغ، المدافع عن التعريفة الجمركية، بعد انتخابه لمجلس الشيوخ في الولايات المتحدة في 1827م.

صدرت في 1828م، التعريفة الجمركية المسماة تعريفة البُغض ، التي دفعت جون كالهون نائب كارولينا الجنوبية إلى حتى يضع نظرية مفادها حتى أية ولاية تستطيع إلغاء القوانين الفيدرالية، وترفض الإذعان لها. وقد دافع عضوالشيوخ روبرت هيني بذكاء عن إبطال القوانين الفيدرالية في 1830م، ورد عليه وبستر بخطبة شهيرة مُعلنًا حتى الدستور قد أوجد أمةً واحدةً متحدةً. وعندما حاولت كارولينا الجنوبية حتى تضع نظرية إبطال القوانين الفيدرالية موضع التطبيق، في سنة 1832م، ساند وبستر الرئيس أندروجاكسون بقوة في مقاومته لهذه المحاولة.
ولكن وبستر لم يتفق مع جاكسون في قرارات أخرى، وبخاصة في مسألة مصرف الولايات المتحدة، عندما عرض جاكسون مشروع قانون للاقتراع، لإعادة توثيق المصرف، وبذل وبستر جهده لإنقاذ الدستور، لكنه فشل.
عارض وبستر انضمام تكساس للاتحاد، خلال سنواته الأخيرة في مجلس الشيوخ، وعارض أيضًا حرب المكسيك. إذ خشى حتى تتمزق الدولة، نتيجة للقتال على الأنطقيم في الغرب. ورغب معظم الشماليين في منع انتشار الرق في الأنطقيم الجديدة، لكن الجنوبيين كانوا مستعدين لهجر الاتحاد إذا مُنع انتشار الرق. ساند وبستر تسوية 1850م، التي أعطت تنازلات للشمال والجنوب، في خطبة إنقاذ الاتحاد.
وزير خارجية الولايات المتحدة
خدم وبستر وزيرًا للخارجية تحت رئاسة الرؤساء وليم هنري هاريسون، وجون تايلر، ثم مع الرئيس ميلارد فيلمور. أجرى مفاوضات معاهدة وبستر ـ آشبورتن، في حُكم تايلر، التي سوت منازعات مين الحدودية وجـنـَّبت الولايات المتحدة حربًا مع بريطانيا، وصادق بطل المجر لاجوس كوسْسُوث، وتحدث عن استقلال المجر في حكم فيلمور.

أصبح على قمة قيادة حزب المحافظين مع منافسه الكبير هنري كلاي. رأى المحافظون ـ بعد تأسيس الحزب في ثلاثينيات القرن التاسع عشر ـ أنه يستحق حتىقد يكون رئيسًا للجمهورية، وقد رُشح واحدًا من مرشحي الحزب الثلاثة في 1836م. وقد تسبب فشله ـ في محاولاته الأخيرة لكي يصبح رئيسًا ـ في شعوره بالمرارة في نهاية حياته
وفاته
توفي وبستر في 24 أكتوبر 1852 في منزله في ماساتشوستس ، بعد سقوطه من حصانه وتعرضه لضربة ساحقة على رأسه مما إدى إلى إصابته بنزيف دماغي . وكانت حدثته الأخيرة "ومازلت أعيش" "I still live".
